What is TMJ and TMD pain?

The temporomandibular joint is like a hinge connecting your jawbone to your skull’s temporal bones, which is the front of each ear. This joint helps you move your jaw up and down and side to side so you can perform tasks such as chewing, talking, yawning, and so on. Problems you face with your jaw and the muscles that control it are known as temporomandibular disorders (TMD).

Temporomandibular Joint

TMD pain could arise from problems in the jaw muscles or with the parts of the joint itself. Incorrect teeth alignment, injury to the joints, jaw or dysfunction of the orofacial muscles, head and neck muscles, hip alignments can lead to TMD issues. All of the above can increase clenching and grinding of your teeth which puts a lot of pressure on the joints. Clenching and Grinding teeth arises from an incorrect bite and incorrect neck and hip posture. Also clenching and grinding is a by-product of an airway obstruction in one’s sleep.

To help keep your pains at bay, we re-establish the harmony in your mouth through concepts of Gneuromuscular Dentistry which is more superior than Neuromuscular Dentistry. This treatment concept is based on establishing a harmonious balance between the hip alignments, head, muscles of the neck, shoulder, the temporomandibular joint and the teeth.

What is GNM Dentistry?

GNM= Gnathologics + Neuromuscular

Gneuromuscular Dentistry (GNM) combines the concepts of having a correct bite and balanced muscle forces. In other words, it is the combination of applying a refined skill set based on the understanding required to effectively treat cases comprehensively. GNM goes beyond the present-day concepts of Neuromuscular Dentistry and focuses on body alignment, optimal mandibular function and accurate occlusion that results in optimal function and form.

A fundamental skill any dentist should have is the ability to find the correct bite. A Gneuromuscular (GNM) TMJ doctor focuses on TMD pain, Body Alignment, Optimal Jaw function & the Correct bite.

What are GNM Orthotics for TMJ treatment?

The appliances used as GNM orthotics for TMJ may look like any other TMJ Splints or TMJ mouthguards. But it implements both gnathologic and neuromuscular principles. The GNM approach and orthotic design cannot be compared by merely looking at the external (visual) features as there are other factors such as its physiologic inherent components that support optimal muscle balance, TM joint harmony, occlusal harmony and many other functional features that move physical dysfunctions to physiologic quality health and shifts functional impairments to an improved quality of life.

Anterior open bite

Crossbite

Neck and cervical problems

Facial/ masseter pain

Unresolved temporal tension I.e sides of the head

Occipital pain behind the head

Shoulder tensions

SCM pain and tension problems

Restricted head rotation problems

Restricted mouth opening problems

Jaw deviates to one side

Clicking and popping in jaw joints

Why opt for GNM? ( Gnatho- Neuromuscular Dentistry )

GNM dentistry is the next level of advancement and is the best method to treat TMJ. GNM dentistry is sophisticated simplicity. In simple language, a correct bite is when there is balance & harmony between the TMJ and posture of the head, neck, shoulders & lower jaw. An incorrect bite is a major contributing factor to TMD.
